Overlap is a student community and networking application currently undergoing private testing, initially focused on students at the University of Calgary.
About Overlap
Overlap is being developed to help students discover people, communities and shared interests within their university environment.
Features under development include student profiles, discovery, communities, direct and group communication, and tools that help students identify shared academic, professional and personal interests.
The service is currently in private/internal testing and is not yet being promoted as a publicly launched product. Access during this phase may be limited to University of Calgary users and approved testers.
How Overlap uses email
Overlap uses email only for low-volume transactional and user-initiated purposes. We do not use our transactional email infrastructure for unsolicited marketing or purchased mailing lists.
Current email use cases include:
- sending a confirmation after a user explicitly requests and successfully completes deletion of their Overlap account;
- notifying the Overlap administrator when an authenticated user explicitly submits feedback or reports an issue through the application.
Abuse and sending safeguards
Email-producing actions are protected by application-level controls designed to prevent accidental duplicate messages and runaway sending. These include submission limits, cooldown periods, durable idempotency, bounded retries and global sending limits.
Feedback and issue reports are limited per authenticated user, and account-deletion confirmations are associated with a specific deletion operation so that the same operation cannot intentionally generate repeated confirmation messages.
Bounce and complaint suppression is also enabled with our email delivery provider.

This Privacy Policy describes the basic privacy practices of Overlap during its private testing period.
Information we may process
Depending on the features a user chooses to use, Overlap may process information such as:
- account information, including an email address;
- profile information voluntarily provided by the user;
- academic, career, interest or discovery preferences;
- community memberships and interactions;
- messages and other user-generated content;
- feedback or issue reports submitted by the user;
- technical information required to operate, secure and troubleshoot the application.
How information is used
Information is used to:
- provide and operate the Overlap application;
- authenticate users and maintain accounts;
- provide communication and community features;
- respond to feedback and investigate reported issues;
- maintain application security and reliability;
- improve the application during private testing.
Email communications
Transactional emails are sent only where necessary for an application action or an explicitly initiated workflow. Overlap does not currently operate a marketing mailing list.
Account deletion
Users may request deletion of their account from within the application.
When an account is deleted, private account and profile information is removed or anonymized according to the application's deletion process. Certain historical content that forms part of shared conversations or communities may remain in anonymized form where necessary to preserve the integrity of shared content.
Support or feedback records may be retained where reasonably necessary for security, troubleshooting, support, or operational purposes.
Service providers
Overlap uses third-party infrastructure and technology providers to operate the application, including cloud hosting, authentication, database, storage and transactional email services.
These providers process information only as necessary to provide their respective services.
Sale of personal information
Overlap does not sell users' personal information.
Private testing
Overlap is still under development. Features and data practices may evolve as the application is tested and prepared for broader release. This policy will be updated when material changes are introduced.

These terms apply to use of Overlap during its private testing period.
Private test service
Overlap is currently an experimental, pre-release application. Features may change, become unavailable, or contain errors during development.
Eligibility and accounts
Access may be restricted to members of supported university communities and specifically approved testers.
Users are responsible for maintaining the security of their account and must not intentionally provide another person access to their authenticated session.
Acceptable use
Users must not use Overlap to:
- harass, threaten or impersonate another person;
- distribute spam or unsolicited commercial messages;
- attempt to gain unauthorized access to another account or system;
- interfere with or intentionally disrupt the application;
- upload or distribute unlawful content;
- abuse reporting, feedback, messaging or other application features.
User-generated content
Users remain responsible for content they submit through Overlap. During private testing, content may be moderated or removed where necessary for safety, operation of the service, or compliance with applicable requirements.
Availability
Because Overlap is currently under development, continuous availability is not guaranteed. The service may be changed, suspended or discontinued as testing progresses.
No warranty
During private testing, Overlap is provided on an "as available" basis without guarantees regarding uninterrupted operation or suitability for a particular purpose, to the extent permitted by applicable law.

These terms may be updated as Overlap develops. The latest version will be made available on this information page.
